Our History

The Rehabilitation Institute of the Caribbean Ltd. is an outpatient rehabilitation centre for Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation (PM&R, also called Physiatry). We were established in 2009 by Dr. Paula Dawson, who holds the distinction of being the only physician in Jamaica with US board certification in Physiatry and has Fellowship training in Interventional Spine, Musculoskeletal and Sports Medicine Rehabilitation. She is currently pioneering the development of the discipline of Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation in Jamaica. Our team is a group of dynamic and well-trained, talented professionals who are skilled in patient care.

Establishment

We opened the doors to our current location in July 2012 where we offer medical care to adults and children for physical recovery; enabling them to regain skills after injury or illness. Our treatment goal is to improve function, performance and the quality of life for our patients. Each patient receives individualised therapy, specific to their unique needs, abilities, and objectives.

Speciality

Rehabilitation is multi-disciplinary collaboration between Physiatrists, Orthopedic surgeons, Neurosurgeons, and other specialist doctors as well as, Physiotherapists, Occupational Therapists, Psychologists, Speech and Language Therapists, Masseuses, Nutritionists and other rehabilitation professionals.

Emphasis is placed on the optimization of function through the combined use of medications, physical modalities, physical training with therapeutic exercise, movement and activities modification, adaptive equipments, orthotics (braces), prosthesis (artificial limbs), as well as patient education and psychological training.
