The most common brain injury occurs after a stroke. The best outcome in Rehabilitation is seen when Rehabilitation is started very soon after the stroke. It is well known that the injured brain is able to repair itself by the process of NEUROPLASTICITY (where nerves regenerate and form new pathways). Recovery can be accelerated by functional Rehabilitation, so maximizing Rehabilitation during the early phase is essential. Most recovery that will occur, does so within the first three (3) to six (6) months after a stroke, so early intervention contributes to a more favourable outcome. In Traumatic Brain Injury, patients may present with more complex motor or cognitive deficit and recovery may extend up to one to two years.
